I have a very nice solid wood dining room table (oak I think), with the cover sheet. "I can stain without sanding?

The board is in perfect condition timber is 4 inches thick. Hard to find a table of this quality these days, but I have to update the style. Do I have to sand if used gel stain, or simply clean up, with something like mineral spirits?

More likely is that there is a layer of lacquer, varnish or polyurethane in top of it. If this is the case you will need to atleast sand if pulling a goal back off before staining. Do not use mineral spirits at all! If you going to the beach, use 180-220 grain grain sandpaper.100 ruin the surface of the table! If you choose to brush the stripper strip to let it sit for a while then take a spatula and carefully remove most of the stripper and finish. Mix 1 / 2 lacquer thinner, and 1 / 2 of denatured alcohol, with 000 steel wool soaked in it and really good scrub. Let dry thoroughly and lightly sand to be ready for dyeing. Be careful not to sand, can burn through metal with ease. If skin always use gloves and a mask and only use in a well ventilated area.
